WIEGO Statistics Meeting Bangkok, Thailand Feb 1 2017

At the request of HomeNet Thailand, the Statistical Office of Thailand hosted a seminar and discussion on February 1, 2017 on improving official data on home-based workers, (both independent home-based workers and homeworkers), and domestic workers. The seminar was led by WIEGO International Coordinator Martha Chen and WIEGO Statistics Programme Director Joann Vanek. Meeting attendees included: Director of the Labour Force Survey Unit, Ms. Thirada Chaidej-Akarakul, Wissanee Poonsab and others in the Labour Survey Group;  Director of the Informal Labour Protection Division of the Department of Labour and Welfare, Mr. Kunchit Manowarangkoon, and his staff; Director of the Statistics Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Margarita Guerrero;  Poonsap Tulaphan and staff from HomeNet Thailand; and Sarah Reed, Coordinator of the WIEGO Focal Cities Bangkok project.

The meeting also provided the opportunity to review how Thailand’s extensive and growing programmes of social protection are reflected in the criteria for identifying informal employment in the yearly labour force survey.

The meeting was important in strengthening the ties of the National Statistical Office to WIEGO, HomeNet Thailand, ESCAP and the ILO, as well as to the Thailand Department of Labour and Welfare. The meeting reflected WIEGO’s and the Thailand National Statistical Office's ongoing efforts to improve data on informal employment, employment in the informal sector and on categories of informal workers.
