Policy Conference on Homebased Workers in South
Asia
Hosted by SEWA and UNIFEM
In January, SEWA and UNIFEM hosted a policy conference,
"Women, Work, and Poverty." The conference examined the
situation of homebased workers in South Asia. The conference was
addressed by Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh (click
here to read the Prime Minister's speech) and was attended by
representatives of home workers' unions and associations and government
representatives from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri
Lanka. A South Asian Regional Plan of Action for Home-based Workers
was adopted. WIEGO Steering Committee Member Dan Gallin also addressed
the conference, urging ratification of C. 177 (click

Director Elaine Jones also participated in the event and spoke about
homebased workers from the global perspective (click

Conference participants developed a
"South Asian Regional Plan of Action for Home-based Workers"
and a short
report of the event.
