Workshop with MUFIS in Malawi

A workshop with the Malawi Union for the Informal Sector (MUFIS) leadership took place on December 12th to 14th 2017, in Lilongwe, Malawi, in order to support MUFIS in efforts to implement Recommendation 204 in Malawi.
Several topics were discussed during the three-day activity workshop, such as negotiation strategies, occupational health and safety and labour laws. The goal was to help the workers to:
- understand ILO Recommendation 204 and how informal workers can use it when demanding protection and support;
- reflect on the challenges we face, including those that are a result of laws, regulations and policies that impact on our work and our organization;
- understand the different laws, regulations and policies that affect us and identify areas where the law can be reformed/amended to better protect us as informal traders;
- develop our negotiation skills to address challenges relating to priority issues, including occupational health and safety, and child care;
- develop strategies to push for the Tripartite Labour and Advisory Council to be fully functional and to meet regularly to hear the voices of informal workers on policies affecting us; and
- build a spirit of solidarity as informal workers.
Pamhidzai Bamu, WIEGO’s Law Programme Africa Coordinator, and Vanessa Pillay, WIEGO’s Organization and Representation Programme Officer attended the event, alongside Malawi Union for the Informal Sector leadership.
