WIEGO and Redesol, a second level network of cooperatives in Minas Gerais, Brazil, organized the V Annual Encare meeting in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The event was an important opportunity for more than 180 waste pickers affiliated to Redesol, which is composed of 14 cooperatives, to discuss current projects, challenges, and to build capacity on issues related to commercialization and addressing policies that can affect them.

This year, WIEGO will be sharing findings from the health risk mapping – The Cuidar Project – with the Redesol network during the morning session. Five of the 14 cooperatives belonging to Redesol participated in the health risk mapping. WIEGO will share:

  • the participatory design of the project
  • findings related to main health concerns
  • health risks related to the handling of specific waste
  • coping strategies developed by each cooperative.

WIEGO hopes that engaging all waste pickers from the 14 cooperatives and other second-level networks present during the meeting will be a step towards collectively addressing how to improve work conditions, health concerns and strategies for claims making with major stakeholders.
