Are Differences in National Definitions of Informal Employment and Employment in the Informal Sector Necessary?
The international standards concerning a statistical definition of informal employment and concerning statistics of employment in the informal sector provide considerable flexibility in applying the definitions in different national settings.
Using a statistical approach, this paper shows that some of the flexibility of the international standards and national differences are not necessary and tools can be developed to narrow the differences.
