Outcomes of the 19th ICLS on Work Statistics

By on November 01, 2013

Global Labour Column - review of 19th ICLS The Global Labour Column (GLC) is a weekly column. In this column, authors Grant Belchamber and Sylvain Schetagne discuss the  outcomes of the 19th International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS), which is convened by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) every five years in Geneva.

They question the stagnant key labour market indicators and the role of the ICLS in tackling the question of what counts as a job. They argue that “The outcome of the revision of work statistics is promising. A new framework that expands the notion of work has been developed, allowing better measurement of different forms of work.”

Belchamber is an Economist and International Officer with the Australian Council of Trade Unions. Sylvain Schetagne is Chief Economist and National Director, Social and Economic Policy Department at Canadian Labour Congress.
