After careful consideration and internal discussion, WIEGO has made the decision to discontinue our activity on the platform X. This means we will no longer be posting on or monitoring X.
For many years, X (formerly Twitter) has been a key channel for WIEGO’s communication, enabling us to share vital research and policy analysis and advocate for the rights of workers in informal employment. However, as an organization committed to workers’ rights, social justice, democracy, and upholding the dignity and agency of all individuals, we can no longer endorse the use of X. The platform's unaddressed issues with hate speech, harassment, and targeted attacks against marginalized communities directly harms those we serve. At the same time, the spread of harmful misinformation actively undermines our commitment to evidence-based advocacy and accurate information. Both of these issues stand in direct opposition to what we represent and stand for.
Going forward, we will be prioritizing communication channels that better align with our values and strategic goals, and will be closely monitoring developments in other channels which have recently also raised concerns in these areas (such as Meta).
We remain committed to amplifying the voices of workers in informal employment and their organizations. We will continue to share our research, policy analysis, updates, and advocacy efforts through the following channels:
- Our website: www.wiego.org - The primary source for all WIEGO information.
- Our newsletter: Sign up here! - Stay updated with monthly emails about our research, events, and much more.
- Other social media platforms:
- LinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/wiego/
- Facebook: facebook.com/wiegoglobal
- YouTube: youtube.com/@wiegoglobal
We encourage you to follow us on our other platforms to stay informed and connected. We value your continued support and partnership as we work towards a more just and equitable future for all.
In solidarity,
The WIEGO Team
