Jobs and Livelihoods – a DFID Report (UK)

By on March 24, 2015

WIEGO was invited by ActionAid to join its panel to provide oral evidence to the UK Parliament's Economic Development Strategy Framework of the Department for International Development (DFID).

The resulting report contains recommendations to DFID and an undertaking that the committee should follow up during the next Parliament to assess progress.

One recommendation: The majority of people working in developing countries are not in formal waged employment but are eking out a living in the informal economy. We recommend that DFID make working with those in the informal economy a priority. Social security funding should be extended to those in the informal economy along the lines of the National Social Security Fund in Tanzania.
