Social and Solidarity Economy Practices of the Planeta Verde Cooperative of Waste Pickers

By , on November 01, 2024

The Planeta Verde cooperative, in the municipality of Rionegro in Colombia’s Antioquia region – along with similar associations across the country – plays a crucial role in advocating for the rights of waste pickers and championing their recognition as essential service providers in municipalities around the country.

The case study on Planeta Verde is based on research including a survey conducted from May to July 2024 as part of the project “Organizational, social and productive practices related to the social and solidarity economy in La Cooperativa de Trabajo Asociado Planeta Verde”. It examines how the cooperative integrates social and solidarity economy (SSE) practices into its daily recycling activities while also extending these principles to broader aspects of its members’ lives. These practices support members’ well-being by addressing key issues such as food security, education, recreation, savings, and access to credit.
