VIDEO: Mesa-debate “Clasificadores y derecho a la ciudad”

By on May 01, 2016

This video is in Spanish. Lucia Fernandez, Waste Picker Sector Advisor for WIEGO, provides an urban perspective on the displacement of waste pickers during the XIX century in Paris, and currently in Montevideo.

This presentation was part of the Right to the City Panel. She discusses how urban reforms have moved waste pickers from the city to the suburbs alongside privatized waste management for the very first time in history.

The current situation of recycling dynamics in Montevideo is explained in the presentation, providing critical analysis of the local government policies that undermine waste pickers' free circulation in the city to the benefit of private companies.

This was a great opportunity to frame the ‘right to the city’ concept towards waste pickers and to highlight WIEGO work in the Uruguayan region.
