Released in Mexico on March 30, which is Domestic Worker Day in that country by SINACTRAHO & CACEH with support from WIEGO.
“Take care of those who care for you” calls on authorities, organizations and employers to resolve the significant job insecurity and historical discrimination faced by domestic workers. It also highlights the responsibility society has to guarantee the rights of domestic workers.
It then talks about the risks domestic workers face re: COVID-19 pandemic, including:
- unjustified dismissals/cuts in income
- those unable to stop working (due to financial need) face greater exposure to the virus through the type of work they do including care work.
The lack of social protections and conditions of poverty make this group one of the most vulnerable to the pandemic.
This statement calls for employers of domestic workers to:
- pay the wages of domestic workers during the quarantine, while they are not working.
- enroll in the IMSS pilot programme to guarantee domestic workers access to social security
- put hygiene and safety measures in place if domestic workers continue to work
It calls on federal/state governments in Mexico to:
- allocate economic resources to domestic workers who have lost income and are below the poverty line
- promote measures meant to avoid rights violations during the pandemic
