In 2015 COP21, an annual international conference that reviews the implementation of the UN’s Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC), for the first time in its history aimed to develop a universal, legally-binding agreement on climate to limit global warming.

Along with WIEGO, several waste picker leaders attended, as well as WIEGO’s partner, GAIA. There was on-the-ground communications training, particularly with regards to Globalrec’s database and online posting through the Waste Picker Web Manager Pablo Rey, so that these leaders could effectively disseminate their activities throughout COP21’s events. WIEGO was involved in discussions around an urban-UN agenda that was also taking place, with the goal of bringing greater visibility to the importance of waste pickers in climate change initiatives.
