February 6, 2017 - February 8, 2017
Dubai, UAE
The Third Meeting of the UN High-Level Panel (UN HLP) on Women’s Economic Empowerment took place on February 6th through 8th, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. WIEGO attended the third official meeting of the UN HLP as part of ongoing participation in the UN HLP process, which began in March 2016.
WIEGO’s International Coordinator, Marty Chen, and WIEGO Board Chair and National Coordinator of SEWA Renana Jhabvala, attended the event. Renana served as a Panelist on the UN HLP with Marty as her Deputy. During the Panel, they discussed WIEGO’s various positions on the working groups, and worked with other panelists to finalize the outputs. Working group outputs were launched at the Commission on the Status of Women in March 2017.
After the launch of the first report at the UN General Assembly in September, the UN HLP went to its second phase. During this phase, participants divided into working groups to look at each “driver” of women’s economic empowerment identified by the Panel from an action standpoint – elaborating practical recommendations for different stakeholders to advance these.
Several WIEGO team members, including WIEGO Law Programme Director Marlese Von Broembsen, WIEGO Social Protection Advisor Rachel Moussié, and WIEGO Writer/Research Assistant Jenna Harvey contributed to these working groups together with Renana Jhabvala, Marty Chen, and Monica Raina of SEWA.
