The Centre for Legal and Social Studies (CELS), the Union of Workers in the Popular Economy (UTEP) and WIEGO will share evidence denouncing the drawback of social policies for workers in the popular economy of Argentina at a public hearing before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. The public hearing will take place on the 14 of November at 11am in Washington DC (Eastern Time).

About the Hearing:

Since 2003, Argentina’s social protection system has experienced positive changes. There has been greater acceptance of social rights and a move towards universality and solidarity in public service delivery. These structural modifications have enabled state benefits - previously provided only to formal workers - to be extended to workers in the popular economy who have limited incomes and are often unprotected by the State. This has included the expansion of retirement coverage, pensions and family benefits like Universal Child Grant (Asignacion Universal por Hijo (AUH)).

Since December 2023, the national government has taken actions to pause, dismantle and stigmatize these social policies, and in doing so is violating the rights of workers in the popular economy to social security and its obligation to uphold the principle of non-regression in relation to this right.

During the hearing, representatives from WIEGO, CELS, and UTEP will outline the social policies that have been rolled back, and the impact on people working in the popular economy. Examples of programs which have been affected include the Potenciar Trabajo program (roughly translated as Enhancing Work) and the Social Monotax (among others).

The delegation includes:

  • Alejandro Walter Gramajo (UTEP)
  • Nicolás Rechanik (UTEP)
  • Paula Litvachky (CELS)
  • Diego Morales (CELS)
  • Tania Espinosa Sánchez (WIEGO)
