WIEGO's Urban Policies Research Director, Caroline Skinner, spoke with eNCA's Uveka Rangappa on March 16 about the impact of COVID-19 restriction measures on informal workers in South Africa.
Noting that just under 1.5 million informal workers lost their livelihoods during last year’s hard lockdown, Caroline said that women’s job losses were greater than men’s in all types of employment. An assumption that everyone has internet access is among the problems that have prevented government relief measures reaching the people they’re aimed at, she said.
South Africa's Daily Maverick also reported on WIEGO's recent work on COVID-19 effects on women in the country's informal sector, with links to our video, policy brief and Workers' Lives publications.
