From the paper's introduction: In this paper we shall argue that it is not informality per se, but the nature of work and its relation to poverty that makes the crucial difference between men and women’s economic situation in the informal economy. Women are more vulnerable, particularly in the changing economic context, due to their poor endowments in education, skill and capital. These more or less structural disadvantages create a nexus between gender, informality and poverty which women find difficult to overcome.
