No person should have to be immersed in solid waste for their livelihood, yet every day hundreds of thousands of informal waste pickers in India and across the developing world scrabble through rubbish heaps in the streets, dumping grounds and landfills to recover recyclables in order to earn a living.
Their continuing presence reminds us of the socio-economic inequalities that must be addressed and corrected by governments, as well as common residents.
