Drawing disparate literatures together, this chapter interrogates the urban food security–informal sector nexus. Data analysis shows that informal retail is not only an important source of employment, particularly for woman, but also a key source of food for poor households in general, and food-insecure households in particular. Given greater supermarket penetration of African cities the implications for food security and informal retailers are considered. Rather than blanket displacement, there are many cases of formal and informal retailers co-existing. Together this evidence suggests that informal retail is playing a critical role in food security. Despite this contribution, analysis of the policy and regulatory environment for public space trading shows that exclusionary practices are pervasive. The chapter concludes by considering factors behind this.
