This paper is the result of research on SEWA including an interview with Ela Bhatt, conducted by Edward Webster, Professor Emeritus at the Society, Work and Development Institute at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Part of this paper was included in a presentation he gave at Kassel University where he had been appointed the first Ela Bhatt Visiting Professor.
