The following themes represent areas of strategic focus for WIEGO.
Building Collective Power
Building collective power is the process of uniting and mobilizing organizations, communities and stakeholders to fight for systemic change and social justice.
Climate Change & Just Transition
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in the earth’s temperatures and weather patterns. It is widely established that humans have been the main driver of the climate crisis, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels which generate greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.
Fiscal Justice
Fiscal justice ensures a fair and equitable distribution of tax burdens and public resources, promoting social equity, reducing inequalities, and ensuring everyone contributes and benefits according to their means.
Formalization
Progressive formalization refers to a gradual participatory process to increase workers’ incomes, improve their working conditions, reduce risks and enhance their wellbeing. This is done through the extension of recognition, rights and legal and social protections, and not only of obligations.
Global Advocacy & Negotiations
The global networks of workers in informal employment engage in global advocacy spaces to gain recognition and visibility for the movement of workers in informal employment.
Global Research
WIEGO’s Global Research involves multi-sector and multi-country data collection. Global Research serves to highlight the pathways of impact on workers’ livelihoods, as well as leverage spaces for local to global advocacy.
Legal Empowerment
Legal empowerment encompasses a range of bottom-up, rights-based approaches that seek to put law in the hands of marginalized communities.
Public & Workplace Services
Public services are government-provided services, such as health and other forms of care services, while workplace services are services that support workers in the places in which they work.
Urban Planning & Design
Urban planning and design are technical and political processes focused on the development and design of land use and the built environment.
Women's Leadership
WIEGO is committed to supporting women workers in informal employment to raise their voices and demands in their organizations and at the negotiation table with employers and governments.
