Johannesburg, South Africa
Approximately 135 leaders, activists, policymakers, and researchers in the informal economy representing over 25 associations, cooperatives and unions of informal workers from over 40 countries converged on Johannesburg, South Africa from November 12-14, 2018.
The occasion was the hosting of WIEGO's 7th Annual General Assembly, under the theme, “Organizing for Change”.
The General Assembly of WIEGO’s membership, held every four years, is a key pillar of WIEGO’s governance structure when the membership meets to review WIEGO’s progress, plans, and budget; to approve the slate of candidates for the new Board; and to endorse the election of representatives for the new Nominations Committee.
In addition, at each General Assembly, a public event on an important theme or aspect of WIEGO’s work is organised. This year, a public event was held to discuss the implementation of Recommendation 204 on the Transition from the Informal to the Formal Economy, adopted at the International Labour Conferences in June 2015
There was also a public event showcasing South African and international experiences with formalization.
