On July 13 2016, in advance of the second meeting of the UN SGHLP, the HLP Secretariat, the Government of Costa Rica, the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and UN Women jointly hosted an event on the ratification of ILO Convention 189 on Domestic Work in Latin America. The event brought together representatives from four countries who have ratified C189 (Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, Dominican Republic) and three who have not (Mexico, Jamaica, El Salvador), to discuss success factors and challenges to ratifying the convention. Participants also discussed good practices in its implementation.
The event aligned with the goals and commitments of the SGHLP panelists to boost ratification of the convention and promote decent work for domestic workers.
WIEGO brought a delegation of leaders affiliated with IDF to participate in the event, including: Marcelina Bautista (Regional Coordinator of IDWF), Ruth Solar Olate Moreno (President of FESINTRACAP, IDWF affiliate in Chile) and Maria del Carmen Cruz Martinez, Secretary of ASTRODOMES (Costa Rica IDWF affiliate) and Secretary General of the Confederation of Domestic Workers for Latin America and the Caribbean (CONLACTRAHO). In addition, WIEGO project officer, Edith Anampa, presented on the Domestic Workers Benefits Campaign recently launched in the San Borja district of Lima, Peru as a good practice.
