On September 29, 2017, the launch of the first payment to Popayan waste pickers as providers of public recycling services took place in Popayan, Colombia. Federico Parra, WIEGO’s Waste Picker Coordinator for Latin America, and Maria Eugenia Duque, Bogota Recyclers Association adviser, attended the event.
The first payment waste pickers from Popayan received from the municipality was the result of a long struggle for inclusion of these informal workers in the waste collection system, and the first payment made outside the Colombian capital.
