A special Issue of The Indian Journal of Labour Economics contains seven papers, contributed by select Chinese and Indian researchers, which are based on large surveys that were carried out in China and India as part of the research project entitled, “Informal Employment, Poverty and Growth in India and China”, which was funded by International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. The Chinese part of the project was carried out by the Institute of Population and Labour Economics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, with Cai Fang and Du Yang as the lead researchers while the Indian part was carried out jointly by the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) and Institute for Human Development (IHD), with Jeemol Unni and Alakh N. Sharma as the lead researchers. The papers included in this volume—three each from China and India—cover only part of the data collected during the surveys in both countries.
