The Position

This is a part-time post supporting WIEGO’s work in Mexico City as part of the Focal Cities Initiative. Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO) is a global organisation focused on building power among membership-based organisations (MBOs) of informal workers globally through: research and statistics, training, advocacy, and movement-building, among other strategies. The aim of WIEGO is to secure rights and protections for informal workers, who make up the majority of workers in the world.

WIEGO’s Focal City work supports organisations of informal workers locally, in four cities: Accra, Ghana; Dakar, Senegal; Lima, Peru and Mexico City, Mexico. Focal City Mexico City (FC CDMX) focuses primarily on support to groups of non-salaried workers, recyclers, domestic workers, street vendors and metro vendors.

The purpose of the Advocacy and Worker Education Specialist role (referred to as the “consultant”) will be to support the development of a cross-sector training platform of workers, and to support the Focal City Coordinator (FCC), who leads WIEGO’s work in Mexico City, in the development of advocacy strategy, carrying out analysis of the changing political landscape in Mexico City, and making recommendations accordingly.

Specifically, the Consultant will be expected to lead the implementation of the training platform – co-developing the curriculum together with the FCC and technical partners, as well as allied organisations, and prioritising content based on inputs from WIEGO’s MBO partners. In parallel, the Consultant will carry out policy analysis in areas relevant to WIEGO’s work and will make a set of recommendations for advocacy priorities based on this analysis. Depending on the Consultant’s interest and skill set, possibility exists for co-leading the facilitation of trainings as well.

This role is for a one-year, part-time consultancy. After the first year, there is a possibility for continued work related to worker education and advocacy with WIEGO in CDMX.

Responsibilities

  • Contact WIEGO’s MBO partners to assess needs and priorities in relation to capacity-building, synthesise findings and share with FCC to decide on a set of priority themes for the curriculum.
  • Review and assess WIEGO’s existing training and content, and work with partners/allied organisations to develop an integrated curriculum, building on both WIEGO and partners content, and prioritising workers’ stated training needs. The consultant will hold lead responsibility for delivering the completed training curriculum.
  • Lead the implementation of the training platform – together with the FC and partners. This will involve providing logistical and administrative support as needed, attending all training sessions, supporting workers to attend as needed, documenting, and assessing and refining plans with FC and partners after each session.
  • Lead WIEGO’s follow-up with participating MBO partners in the training platform, including developing and implementing a set of evaluative questions, and summarising the results for the WIEGO FC.
  • Support WIEGO’s current efforts to support our MBO partners in advocacy for improved working conditions by providing strategic guidance, advice and policy analysis to help us move towards our strategic goals, with a specific focus on the changing political landscape.
